What is the proper way to refer to someone with Autism?

Updated: Jan 27, 2023

In the autistic community, many individuals prefer to be referred to as an “autistic individual”, “person with autism”, or “autistic.” If you are unsure what someone prefers just ask! The most important thing to remember is that you do not necessarily have to call somebody with autism “special.” Along with this, you should never be calling someone with autism the r-slur, or use the word “autistic” while making jokes. It is incredibly disrespectful, insensitive, and unacceptable.
